Important role of connecting rod

Nov 20, 2024

The two ends of the connecting rod mechanism are respectively hinged with the driving member and the driven member to transmit motion and force. For example, in reciprocating piston power machinery and compressors, the connecting rod is used to connect the piston and the crank. The connecting rod is mainly a steel part, the cross section of the main body is mostly circular or I-shaped, there are holes at both ends, and bronze bushings or needle bearings are installed in the holes for installing the shaft pin to form a hinge.

The connecting rod is an important part of the automobile engine. It connects the piston and the crankshaft. Its function is to convert the reciprocating motion of the piston into the rotational motion of the crankshaft, and transmit the force acting on the piston to the crankshaft to output power. During operation, the connecting rod not only bears the pressure generated by the combustion chamber gas, but also bears the longitudinal and lateral inertial forces. Therefore, the connecting rod works under a complex stress state. It bears alternating tensile and compressive stresses and bending stresses. The main forms of damage to the connecting rod are fatigue fracture and excessive deformation. Generally, fatigue fracture is the three high stress areas on the connecting rod. The working conditions of the connecting rod require the connecting rod to have high strength and fatigue resistance. It also requires sufficient rigidity and toughness.

A brief introduction to the connecting rod:

The function of the connecting rod is to transmit the force of the piston to the crankshaft and convert the reciprocating motion of the piston into the rotational motion of the crankshaft. It consists of a connecting rod body, a connecting rod cover, a connecting rod bolt and a connecting rod bearing bushing. The connecting rod body and the connecting rod cover are divided into a small end of the connecting rod, a shaft and a large end of the connecting rod.

The small end of the connecting rod is used to install the piston pin to connect the piston. The shaft is usually made into an "I" or "H" shaped section to reduce the mass while meeting the requirements of strength and rigidity.

The big end is connected to the connecting rod journal of the crankshaft. It is usually made into a separate type, and the half cut from the shaft is called the connecting rod cover, and the two are connected as a whole by a connecting rod bolt.

The connecting rod bearing bushing is installed in the big end hole seat of the connecting rod and assembled with the connecting rod journal on the crankshaft. It is one of the important matching pairs in the engine. Commonly used anti-friction alloys mainly include white alloys, copper-lead alloys and aluminum-based alloys.
